Composite Fillings in Chattanooga, TN
Patients in need of a filling to repair damaged or decayed teeth are used to seeing a silver-colored amalgam material, but in recent years, most dentists have switched to an alternative – tooth-colored composite resin. Understandably, many patients want to find out more about this filling material. Some of the most common questions we hear and their answers are outlined below. If you have questions you don’t see here or would like to schedule an appointment, contact our friendly team today.
What is Composite Resin?
Composite resin is a mixture of plastic and glass that can be shaded to match patients’ natural tooth color.
How are Composite Fillings Placed?
We place the malleable material directly onto the damaged tooth in layers. These layers are shaped to fully restore the lost dental structure. Then, we use a curing light to harden the composite resin in place. Finally we apply a clear, protective coat and polish the tooth.
Why do You Use Composite Resin Instead of Amalgam Fillings?
In addition to the obvious cosmetic superiority of composite resin fillings, they also allow us to preserve more natural dental structure, provide support for remaining healthy tooth structure, and they are less likely to break away from the tooth over time.

We are able to use a variety of materials to complete advanced dental restorations like crowns, bridges, inlays, and onlays including gold and porcelain bonded to metal. Each of these materials has advantages and disadvantages, but metal-free, all-ceramic crowns look completely natural, offering patients superior cosmetic restoration, and these materials are completely safe and effective for patients who have allergies or sensitivity to metal. We use high quality E-Max ceramics to complete our metal-free restorations. These materials offer flawless appearance, maximum durability, and minimal wear to opposing teeth. Unlike porcelain bonded to metal restorations that darken and discolor as the porcelain layer wears away over time, E-Max crowns retain their natural appearance even after years of wear. Additionally, this high quality ceramic is less likely to chip, crack, or break away from the treated tooth.
Sometimes what patients dislike about their smile actually has nothing to do with their teeth. Gums play a large role in giving smiles their shape. Patients who have an uneven gum line or excessive soft tissue are often displeased with the way their smile looks, and we offer a treatment known as gum recontouring to improve the appearance of “gummy” smiles. We remove a small amount of soft tissue. Then, we reattach the gums using stitches. Once the tissue heals, patients have a flawless smile.
