Dental emergencies cannot always be avoided, but having a plan to care for smiles in case of emergency can make these situations more comfortable. At East Hamilton Dental, we are happy to provide same day emergency dentistry appointments in most cases. We do our utmost to see patients right away, and we are happy to walk patients through first aid and pain management over the phone. For patients from Chattanooga, Ringgold, and other nearby communities, the first step in case of dental emergency should be to contact our dedicated dental team. If it’s outside of regular hours, simply contact our office number, and follow the after hours contact instructions.
Our dentists and team trust patients, if they believe their situation is an emergency, but for those patients who may not be sure they’re experiencing an emergency, some of the most common cases we treat are listed below:
- Avulsed (knocked out), chipped, or fractured teeth
- Avulsed, chipped, or fractured dental restorations
- Broken or damaged partial and full dentures
- Severe toothache that may be indicative of root canal infection
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your oral health and overall safety. Bleeding should be slowed or stopped quickly. Start by rinsing the damaged area with cool water. Then, apply gentle pressure to the site with gauze or a clean cloth. If bleeding doesn’t slow within a few minutes, we recommend applying a cold compress. Ice packs and cold compresses help slow or stop bleeding, and they are also helpful in relieving pain and swelling. If you experience a lost tooth, replace the tooth in the vacated socket whenever possible, or store the tooth in milk or water. If you experience severe facial trauma or potentially broken jaw, proceed to your nearest emergency room.
